I originally made this audio story back in 2012, and it was the first one based on something I had written myself. I didn't a hundred percent know what I was doing technically, and after I finished it, I submitted it to a few audio engineering forums for feedback. I was very happy with some of the tips people gave me and it helped me to work out what I needed to learn more about. But I also got some harsh criticism for the audible 'mouth clicks' in the story (which I narrated myself) - and that stung a bit!

Over the last six years, I have been working almost full-time as a podcast editor, and I now know exactly what the person was talking about.

And so without completely dismantling the originaI, I have cleaned up the spoken word part of this original recording -- and while I was at it, I added another layer of sound design that I always thought was missing from the first version: that is, the sound of the ship's crew.

I have also built up a much more fierce-sounding maelstrom, which is the centre-piece of this story.

So if you listen with headphones, you will hopefully experience the full effect.

I was kindly allowed to use the music 'Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted' by electronic musician Carlos Perón, which I had heard first on a compilation -- as well as 'Radio' by The Fascination Movement, which had been released first on the amazing Aube Label. The additional drones are by me.
